Hakaluki Haor BD Sylhet
The biggest haor of Bangladesh. It is one of the largest freshwater wetlands in Asia. Its area is 18 thousand 115 hectares. Among them only the area of Bill is 4 thousand 400 hectares. It is spread across Baralekha (40 percent), Kulaura (30 percent), Fenchuganj (15 percent), Golapganj (10 percent) and Biyanibazar (5 percent) of Sylhet district.
Geologically, it is located at the foothills of the Meghalaya Hills of India in the north and the Tripura Hills in the east. Because of the geological features of the high mountains upstream, Hakaluki Haore experiences flash floods almost every year. There are 80-90 small, large and medium bills in this hoar. In winter, the whole area becomes busy with migratory birds around these bills.
Bills are getting smaller due to siltation in Haor area during monsoon. After the monsoon water recedes, paddy is cultivated in some places. Thousands of cattle roam the billows after harvest. Hakaluki Haore has abundant fisheries.
These haor bills are the natural habitat of many species of native fish. According to ichthyologists, this haor is the mother fishery. There are various rare species of fish here. Haor area is mainly inhabited by professional fishermen, seasonal fishermen and khoraki fishermen.
