The number of visitors to the National Science and Technology Museum is constantly increasing to discover the new discoveries of science, the reasons for the change of era and to increase the scope of knowledge. Thousands of visitors are coming to this museum every day from different parts of the country.
Demonstrating the country's scientific and technological progress, demonstrating the progress of science and working tirelessly to build a science-minded educated human society.
As a result its spread is now spreading everywhere in cities, towns or villages. It organizes science fairs, science competitions and exhibitions of science and technology materials for people of all walks of life at the divisional, district and upazila levels of the country including the capital. Along with this, Museu is delivering mobile science and technology exhibits to people in remote areas of the country through buses. That is why the interest of young people is gradually increasing towards museums.
It was established in Dhaka on April 26, 1965 by the then Government of Pakistan. After the independence war of Bangladesh it came under the purview of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
In April 1970 it was shifted to Chamelibagh in Dhaka and in May of the following year it was shifted to Road No. 1 in Dhanmondi. In 1972 it was accorded the status of National Museum and started functioning as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 1979, the museum was moved to Dhanmondi Road No. 6 and the next year it was again shifted to a place in front of Kakrail Mosque. The Government of Bangladesh allocated a 5 acre piece of land in Agargaon, Sherbangla Nagar, Dhaka for the construction of its own building for the museum and completed the construction of its own building there in 1981.
It is being conducted under the supervision of the Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology and with the coordination of eminent persons related to Science, Technology, Education and Museums. The museum has a total of 7 galleries, two separate entrances and exits and guided tours. If the sky is clear on Saturday and Sunday, visitors can observe the sky with the help of a telescope in the evening.
The four-storied museum houses galleries on the 1st and 2nd floors, offices on the 3rd floor and Bangladesh Science Academy on the 4th floor. 1st and 2nd floors have Science, Industrial Technology, Information Technology, Biology, Fun Science and Young Scientist Project Galleries.
The building houses a library, workshops and auditorium. There are adequate stairs and an elevator for visitors. A dinosaur statue and a small fighter plane are placed in front of the building. A total of 50 car parking spaces have been kept in the museum premises. There are all kinds of fire extinguishing systems.Photography and loud noises are strictly prohibited inside the museum. Bags, cameras etc. carried with the visitor have to be deposited at the counter and entered.
There are 490 science clubs in different places including districts and upazilas of the country registered with this museum. Science Clubs are established under the auspices of museums to teach through science exhibitions, create interest in science and develop the innovative power of the young generation.
Besides, district level science fair, general quiz after team visit, organization of science lecture and various programs on International Science Day.
Time Schedule and Entry Fee-
The museum is open from 9 am to 5 pm every Saturday to Wednesday. The entry fee for visitors is ten rupees. But entry fee is free for children below 5 years. The museum is closed on Thursdays and Fridays of every week and on all public holidays. The number of visitors to the museum increases manifold during solar and lunar eclipses as compared to other days.
