kotowali Door- Is- Historical- Border- Guard- Area- At- Chapainawabganj.

 kotowali Door BD Chapainawabganj

Thousands of people travel on this road normally.  The truck comes.  The monstrous trucks kick up the dust and people walk from one country to another through that historic door. The structures of that vanished door are still standing.  Now as we are traveling daily from Bangladesh to India or from India to Bangladesh and the guards on both sides are standing with stern eyes to collect their revenue or perform their duty just like 800 years ago Kotwals used to guard the Kotwali gate of Gaur city.  And that's why this place is named Kotwali Door still fractional remnants of that door are standing on the Bangladesh-India border.

Named after the Persian word for city police 'kotwal'.  This city police (Kotwal) was engaged in guarding the southern wall of Gaur city.  Today it is almost ruined.  The central arch of the entrance is 9.15 m high and 5.10 m wide.  His description mentions the ramparts on the eastern and western sides of the entrance.  Bullets or arrows were fired at the enemy through these holes. There were semi-circular turrets with gradual slopes on both the inner and outer sides.  A portion of the outer bastion is now visible with a large convex outline with lined kharchidra.  The side walls of the bastions still exist and extend far to the east and west.  The western wall ends up to the river, while the eastern wall reaches some distance inside the Indian border.  Then this wall re-entered India by going northwards through Bangladesh.  The thick mud walls show how strong the defense system of the city was then.  Both the inner and outer sides of the entrance arches are decorated with elaborate panels and within these panels are hanging motifs.  Some of these panels still survive.

Residents of the southern 'Nagar Upkanthe' had to pass through this archway to enter the ancient Gaur capital.  This was also the southern route of the inhabitants of Nagardurga.  The arch above it has been destroyed long ago.  The height of this pylon is 312 feet and the width is 16 feet.  The length of the entrance is 17 feet 4 inches.  General Cunningham wrote, "It is one of the masterpieces of ancient Muslim architecture".  He also surmises that this beautiful city wall and arch were built when Delhi came to power in Lucknow after the death of Sultan Alauddin Khilji.''  Dr. Dani says, “It was built as the city gate of the capital during the reign of Sultan Nasiruddin Muhammad Shah of Bengal (after the transfer of the Gaur capital from Pandua).” On either side of this pylon were two santri houses, 6 feet round.  There used to be guards with firearms.  Both these torans and santrigarhs had different types of woodwork.
