The Majestic Sundarbans: A Complete Travel Guide to the World’s Largest Mangrove Forest

Introduction:

Sundarbans is in the first place within the sights or tourist centers. It is the largest mangrove forest in the world, covering an area of about 1,39,500 hectares (345,000 acres). Thousands of tourists visit the Sundarbans every year to witness its breathtaking nature and the legendary Royal Bengal Tiger. Straddling the border of Bangladesh and India, this 10,000 square kilometer forest is a labyrinth of tidal waterways and small islands.





The Sundarbans is located in the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal. It covers parts of the Khulna, Satkhira, and Bagerhat districtsof Bangladesh. What makes it unique is its ecosystem where trees survive in saline water, with thousands of "Pneumatophores" (breathing roots) sticking out of the ground.

How to get there:

If you want to go to the Sundarbans from Dhaka, first you have to go to Khulna. There are buses, trains, and launches to Khulna. There are three ways you can go about this:

Bus:

​Hanif, Sohag, and Eagle Paribahan buses ply regularly to Khulna from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. From Khulna, you have to go to Mongla (50 km away), and then take a small launch or trawler into the forest.

  • Rent: Non-AC bus fare is 400 to 750 tk. AC bus fare is 550 to 1,300 tk.

Train:

​Traveling by train is very comfortable. Several intercity trains run on the Dhaka-Khulna route:

  • Available Trains: Subarna Express, Kopotaksh, Sagardari, Chitra Express, and Sundarbans Express.
  • Rent: Train fares range from tk 250 to tk 1,200 depending on the class.
