There are various historical monuments scattered all over the western districts of the country. Among the traditional structures of Chapainawabganj, this small gold mosque has an ancient history. Sultanate and Mughal rulers ruled the region from the mid-15th century to the end of the 16th century. It is believed that this mosque was built during the Sultanate period.
One of the oldest mosques in Bangladesh. The structure was built in Pirojpur village on the outskirts of Gaur city, the capital of ancient Bengal, which now falls under Shibganj police station in Chapainawabganj district of Rajshahi division of Bangladesh. A person named Wali Mohammad built this mosque during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Hussain Shah (1494-1519 AD). This information is known from an inscription found on the middle door of the mosque. It is just 3 km from Kotwali Door. in the south The mosque is one of the landmarks of Muslim architecture. It is built in Hussain-Shah style of architecture.
This small gold mosque is a historical structure of Gaurnagari during the medieval Sultanate period. The mosque was called the 'Jewel of Gaur'. The exterior of the mosque was covered with gold. When the sun shines on it, it shines like gold. That's why its name is Sona Masjid. But carelessly, the gold color of the mosque is no longer there. It has now turned copper in color.
The entrance to the mosque has five carved doors of the same shape. Four domes can be seen from anywhere outside the mosque. Originally this mosque had five domes but the five domes are never seen together. The mosque measures 82 x 52.5 feet in length and width. The thickness of the wall of the mosque is 6 feet.
The interior of the mosque is black with eight pillars divided into three aisles north-south and five rows east-west. The middle row of these five rows is 14.5" wide and the others 11.5" wide. Each design is semi-circular. Inside the mosque are 8 pillars and 15 domes of the mosque are built on the surrounding walls. About 500 Muslims can pray together inside and outside the mosque.
The stone archway at the entrance of the mosque is also beautifully crafted. Rows of graves of that period are in front of this pylon. All tied up. Two graves are lined with large black stones. After that, Ambagan will be seen on the south-east side of the mosque.
In 1897, three domes of the mosque and some parts of the western side wall collapsed in an earthquake. In 1900, the British government renovated the dome and the wall.
The graves of two heroic children of the liberation war are in the premises of Chota Sona Mosque. Inside the boundary wall at the east-south corner of the mosque are the graves of the great captain Mohiuddin Jahangir and the freedom fighter Major Nazmul Haque, the commander of the 7th sector in the war of liberation.
