Tahakhana- Is- The- Historical- Place- At-Chapainawabganj.

 Tahakhana Complex BD Chapainawabganj

Tahakhana is located at a distance of about 35 km from Chapainawabganj.

Tahkhana is a Persian word which literally means cold building or palace.  Located on the western bank of a large pond in the Ferozepur area of Gaur-Lucknow, the building structure is traditionally known as Tahkhana.  There are two other structures to the north-west of the building, the nearest is a three-domed mosque and a little further north is a domed mausoleum surrounded by a vaulted porch.  Since the buildings were built for a specific purpose at the same time, all the buildings together are considered as a single unit or a complex.  It is not known exactly who built this complex.  However, the architectural features of the buildings, the application of the Mughal style that contrasts with the Sultanate style buildings, and contemporary and later historical accounts indicate that its builder was the Mughal Subahdar Shah Shuja (1639-1660 AD).  He used to visit Gaur-Lakhnauti from time to time to pay respect to the Sufi saint Shah Niamatullah Wali and he used to stay there.  Rajmahal was the capital of Shah Shuja, not far from Gaur.  But his frequent visits to Gauda and the magnificent Mughal arch called Lokochuri Darwaza located there make this argument even more compelling.  It is likely that Shah Shuja built this small palace and its adjoining mosque and mausoleum as a khanqah for dervishes.  The tomb was probably originally built for the final resting place of the Dervish (died 1664 or 1669)

The two-storied building is mainly made of brick.  However, black stone has been used for the door frames and wooden beams for the flat roof.  From the west the building appears single story, but from the east it reveals a two story structure, with ground floor rooms extending to the east and archways rising directly from the aqueduct.  On the south side of the building is a bathhouse where water was supplied from a cistern through an octagonal cistern.  A small family mosque is located on the north side, behind which is an open room connected to an octagonal tower room.  This tower room was probably used for meditation.  The octagonal tower provided balance to the entire complex.  The palace is plastered and carved.  These decorative styles are from the Mughal period.  The Tahkhana complex is important for the Mughal style architecture in the city during the Sultanate period.  This type of architecture is the first in Bengal.  After the emergence of such complexes, complexes with such palaces, mosques or mausoleums became a common practice in Dhaka and Murshidabad.

The place where Tahkhana is now located was formerly known as Pirojpur.  This Tahkhana is a significant structure of this Pirojpur place on the Bangladesh-India border.

This class of edifices is the only one observed among the ancient kirtis of Gauda.  The khoya was cast on the karikath with the roof and kotha being fixed.  Near the mentioned mosque and tahkhana is situated on the banks of lake Dafeul Balah.  From these two buildings two stairs extend to the bottom of the lake.  There are two other structures to the north-west of the building, the nearest is a three-domed mosque and a little further north is a domed mausoleum with a vaulted porch.
